Simpletons. All of them.
When she had been offered the job on the desolate island, her mind had briefly gone into turmoil over how to respond. Studying abroad would be favorable, and even more, it would be a way to work in the fields of science that she had long dreamed dabbling in. The people there might be less intellectual, but they were scientists, and she would have to expect the best if she went. Yet Clara had no idea that her fellow associates would be so imbecilic, puerile and ludicrous.
Clara found that she had only been on the island for a few days, when she started to feel painfully constricted among her fellow workers. They all obviously thought she was a joke because of her native accent, which frustrated her beyond compare, and the only time they really understood her was when she used the simplest words. "Careful with that tetramethyldiaminobenzhydrylp-hosphosphinous," she'd say, and they'd stare at her with the most dazed look she'd ever seen in her life. Clara had never been more frustrated in her life. Sure, she had to use smaller words in college, but for scientists? As she'd said, simpletons.
After a frustrating morning of being misunderstood by many, Clara had walked into the dining hall to eat something. She received many looks from fellow scientists that she had been with this morning, and let out a small sigh. I presume that this work will not be any different than my years in college. Clara thought, and sat down with her tray of food. The appetizing lunch consisted of an apple, lathered in pesticides no doubt judging from the lack of food on this island coupled with the surplus of bugs. Next the the apple was a bottle of water, most likely shipped from a different continent, a small bowl of soup, possibly from a can, and a piece of bread. Clara sat there for a moment, realizing the simplicity of this lunch, and how she probably shouldn't get it in the future. Sighing, and deciding she wasn't hungry at the moment, Clara pushed it away. "Apples contain cyanide anyway. I would appreciate it if my afternoon wasn't riddled with headaches, confusion, dizziness, vomiting and the difficulty of breathing, along with numerous other symptoms." She muttered to herself.
