The caves are deep caverns withing the earth. To some they are useless, but to others they provide protection and a quick place to hide, or raise young. The dam as many call it is just a metaphor for a name. The deadwood's is a very dark and deserted place. Most of the trees were killed by a sickness that washed through, but they still stand with a rotted exterior.
