The Algae Biomass Organization has published an online map showing algae production facilities and research projects around the world.
The map shows that algae, which can produce a wide range of products including renewable fuels, feed, fertilizers and chemicals, can grow in a wide range of climates and provide economic benefits without causing harmful impacts to land or fresh water, says Mary Rosenthal. executive director of ABO.
The Algae Industry Map shows the location of algae Canada Mobile Database companies, research institutes, national laboratories, demonstration and commercial projects, and other efforts undertaken by ABO members and non-members. ABO will continually update the map as new companies, projects and studies are announced, it said.
The ABO survey of more than 470 algae industry members shows that 67 percent of algae producers said they plan to expand capacity in 2013, and more than 95 percent of producers believe algae-based fuels will be able to compete with fossil fuels as soon as 2020.
In 2011, United Airlines operated the first biofuel passenger flight in the United States, running on a mixture of renewable algae-derived jet fuel and conventional jet fuel.
Last fall, Inland Empire Paper Company and AlgEvolve commissioned an advanced biological water treatment system at IEP's Millwood, Washington facility. Headquartered in Montana, AlgEvolve developed its advanced biological nutrient recovery system to remove phosphorus, nitrogen and other components using algae byproducts and oxygen instead of harsh chemicals.
OriginOil and Ennesys' algae collection system, which the companies say generates clean energy for buildings, helps purify water and contributes to France's energy goals, was unveiled at the grand opening of a city algae exhibition near Paris in December 2012, Energy reports Manager Today.
Sun Tunnel has introduced the VELUX solar roof window (pictured), which provides an energy-efficient way to add daylight, fresh air and cooling to buildings. The solar roof window requires no wiring, can be installed in any direction and is fully operational even with indirect light. An acoustic rain sensor system automatically closes the skylight in the event of inclement weather, and without the need for electricity, the skylight can be closed even in the event of a complete power outage. Sun Tunnel claims its skylight lets in twice as much daylight as a vertical window without compromising privacy. The solar skylight can be ordered with one of eight factory-installed shutter options and comes fully operational with one unified remote control.
