The United Nations (UN) warns that the war in Ukraine has fueled the global food crisis. Although the conflict territories only represent a small proportion of imports from manufacturing countries, they are essential suppliers of raw materials such as wheat.
The impacts are already reflected in the medium and short range, such as the inflation caused by the cost of fertilizers and the shortage of grains, which is one of the most notable, since it implies the increase in prices of some products.
Global food crisis
Ongoing food crisis
According to The Guardian , the World Bank has Chinese American Phone Number List announced additional financing of $12 billion to mitigate the devastating effects. Likewise, the Secretary General of the UN , António Guterres, pointed out that the lack of cereals and fertilizers caused by the war, the alteration in temperatures and the supply problems caused by the pandemic threaten to “lead tens of millions of people to the edge of the global food crisis.”
During a meeting of the international organization in New York on food security, Guterres said that what could follow is "malnutrition, mass hunger and famine, in a crisis that could last for years."
Free grain exports!
The Secretary General claimed to be negotiating with Russia to free up Ukrainian grain exports, as part of the solution to the global food crisis.
The complex economic, financial and security implications require goodwill from all parties to reach a comprehensive agreement.

He added: "I will not go into details because public statements could undermine the chances of success." In this sense, it is not that the effective solution to the global food crisis is going to be resolved with food production in Ukraine, but it would provide cushioning.
The breadbasket of the world is stranded
Before the invasion, the attacked nation was considered the breadbasket of the world. Exporting 4.5 million tons of agricultural products per month: 12% of the planet's wheat, 15% of corn and half of the sunflower oil.
But with the ports of Odessa, Chornomorsk and others being cut off by Russian warships, supplies can only travel over congested land routes, making them much less efficient.
This has caused the costs of fertilizers, wheat and other basic inputs to skyrocket. The UN Food and Agricultural Products Price Index hit an all-time high of nearly 160 points in March before falling 1.2 or 0.8% in April. Grains and meat also hit record highs in March.
For his part, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who chaired the summit, echoed the call along with the director of the World Food Programme , David Beasley.
