Saving them? She choked on a retort as he left. The boy looked at her with the innocent little kid eyes that she couldn't seem to avoid. He had some heart, she thought. Some flecks of rebellion or simply curiosity. Why did he want to touch her feathers? They looked like those of a bird that'd been laying dead in the dirt. Mint contemplated for a moment whether or not Riley was talking down to the boy, chastising him for things he had yet to do.
"I'd bet your feathers are soft, too bad I can't quite reach them."
Hail clenched his jaw, teeth pressing together as he scanned the rest of his email noncommittally. Luce hadn't shown her face at the island for as long as he'd been there. His aunt generally left them alone, that was how he liked it. That was what was best. She traveled with an annoying squad of her own offspring. All sized up feline hybrids, all to loyal for their own good. It was like a lady with her two pet crocodiles and no one could raise a hand to say hey, what's with the amphibians, miss?
Hail immediately assumed she was on her way to collect Mariel for herself.
