p h o e b e I seemed to be trying to convince myself that as long as I kept trying, then maybe I would somehow memorize every single tree in this entire forsaken forest and maybe, just maybe, I could make it through an entire day without crashing into something. I can sense things around people, not inanimate objects. Like trees.
As I flew, I shut my eyes - although doing so was useless - as if it could help me concentrate harder. I was fairly certain I had come to the maximum of my abilities, but you could never be sure. Rumours had it that if you really kept trying, you could push it over the max. I guess that was my goal. If I kept trying, maybe I could sense things. Or, maybe my power would magically convert into eyesight. What I wouldn't give for eyesight now. Anyways, I focused all my energy into it as I flew at a high speed through the forest. I could feel the wind rustling through my feathers, and I felt invincible. I hadn't hit anything yet, so maybe I was . . .
With a jarring crash, I ran smack into a towering tree. It felt enormous, and I had hit it head on. With a small cry of pain, I fell a good drop to the ground, moaning in pain. I landed on my back, knocking the wind out of my lungs. I coughed once, sounding hoarse. "Ow, damn," I muttered, rolling over. I dragged myself to my knees, breathing heavily. That really, really hurt worse than you could imagine.
